Profile Information

What I do... (Actor, director, designer, teacher etc?)
Entertain through radio plays. I write mostly 10-30 minute pieces which stand alone but are increasingly parts of larger series.

I also direct and produce, and if there's a role that no one else wants, I act.

In a larger sense, I present a fuller range of radio drama options to audiences, performers, and producers than they might realize the form offers.
My Quick CV
Currently in production to release "Mayonnaise in My Cake and Other Delights" on October 1, 2009. Mayonnaise is an anthology of radio plays with a few short stories tossed in for fun. My first book, an anthology of radio plays titled "Chekhov, O. Henry, Spear and Tarkington On the Air" was published in 2006.

I also publish and produce Lit Between the Ears (the link is listed below)
The first thing that inspired me in theatre...
Listening to the intros of 1930s - 1950s style radio drama. The ability to move from comedy to drama to suspense to serials and back again with just a few seconds of voices, music, and sound effects grabbed my attention and never let go.
My favourite theatre something is...
Norman Corwin's "On a Note of Triumph"
The thing that annoys me about our industry...
Not enough broadcast opportunities for live performance. Netcasting is compensating to an extent, but to tell an audience they can hear it live at 8:30 on Thursday is desirable.

The main character is Frank Curts, a quarterback for the American football team, the Rivermen, in the Industrial Football League. Curts had been bothering me to write his story for four years.

The NaPlWriMo seemed a fine opportunity to get the broad parameters of Cu… Continue

Now, if I could just find the ending and move onto the next projects!

Off the Pipes

Our entry in the 2009 National Playwriting Month (NaPlWriMo) is Off the Pipes, an audio drama. Summary follows:

Off the Pipes is about Frank Curts, a quarterback in the Industrial Football League (IFL). Curts is an accomplished quarterback but has never won the league championship. The closest he got was early in his career but a last second field goal bounced off the goal posts – the pipes, as they are called – and was missed because the kicker was high from smoking crack. Curts will remember… Continue

Sounds of Greatness: Johnny Parks calls Desperate Times’ stretch drive in the 1984 Gardenia Derby May 18, 2009

In 1984, veteran sports announcer Johnny Parks was on-hand for the Gardenia Derby. Run annually on the second to last Monday in May in Roberts County, that year’s race featured three big, strong horses that were the class of the field – Marvelous Son, Beautiful Flowers, and All Aboard. All three had outstanding records and each was capable of capturing the first place Champion’s Wreath.

Another seven horses were entered with varying chances to win. But the eleventh horse was a scrawny affair wi… Continue

Good afternoon,

I have read your page on British Theatre and I wanted to get in touch with you.

I am currently a Marketing Manager for a political green play The Forecast. It will be presented from 19th January to 7th February at the Greenwhich Playhouse in London.

I have more than 3 years of experience in marketing and PR and am passionate about theatre. I also have a background in journalism (written and broadcast).

I was wondering if you need any marketing or promotional support for one of your plays or for your work on radio.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best wishes,

Diane Gaillard

Interesting. I am just trying to break into radio. I've had minor success with a collaborative project and recently had a short story accepted which I will also be directing. I'm waiting to hear back from the producer with regards an actress. I'm looking forward to working closely with a performer as I feel it will be a valuable learning curve. I hope we can sell it on once it is finished..!!

Do you have any advice you could offer re: writing and directing for radio? Also do you have any links to your work? I am interested in having a listen...

regards
rich

Hi William,

In answer to your question, we are based in Bristol, UK but we do travel to set up / further develop projects in other countries.
Depends on if you have something for us to set up or support.

Last September I was invited back to China to help Taiyuan Acrobatic Troupe, re training programme development and to help initiate more westernised ideas to be integrated into there performances to make their shows more ‘sellable’ to Western audiences. I took with me 2 members of our teaching staff and it was a very positive and productive experience for all.

We may be going to Kenya next - we've just received an invite to set up a social/professional project there!

Let me know your thoughts...

Best Wishes

Jackie
