Profile

What I do... (Actor, director, designer, teacher etc?)
Theatre author and playwright
My Quick CV
I am a retired news journalist who used to cover twice nightly variety theatre presentations in the late 1950s and 1960s. I have written books about the theatre, including a history of the Grand theatre, Wolverhampton, and in March 2008 produced a unique on variety houses entitled 'Old Theatres of the Midlands. More details appear on web pages www.oldtheatres.co.uk The book has a Foreword by that master of mirth, Mr. Ken Dodd, together with nearly 180 pictures of present and forgotten theatres. It is available only by subscription, and its launch was at the Palace theatre, Redditch, in the West Midlands, a preserved theatre built by Bertie Crewe. My photograph with the La Reserve 'Lovelies' brings back happy memories of the dying days of variety. A link has been established with America's vaudeville days. I have also written three musicals, one of which was performed at the Alexandra theatre, Bognor Regis, West Sussex, to mark the Millennium.
The first thing that inspired me in theatre...
At the age of seven, I was taken to see a pantomime at the Hippodrome theatre, Wolverhampton, and have never forgotten the magic of its colourful scenery, bright lights and glittering costumes. When I started working as a journalist in the town 15 years later, I was saddened to see the remaining shell of the theatre which had been completely burned to the ground.
My favourite theatre something is...
Joining the Frank Matcham Society, and enjoying seeing the wonderful theatres that he built in Britain that still remain
The thing that annoys me about our industry...
Delays in communication, although there are many good reasons for this
