孤独と想像力をユーモラスに、そして胸を打つかたちで描いた『クライヴ』は、友情とテクノロジー、そしてサボテンに話しかけることをめぐる新作一人芝居です。
トーマスは在宅で働いている。彼は一日を思いどおりに組み立て、親友のクライヴ――背の高い観葉植物のサボテン――に飽きることなく話しかけて過ごす。だが仕事がうまくいかなくなり、フラットの壁が迫ってくるように感じ始めると、トーマスは次第に追い詰められていく。隣人たちに執着し、外の世界とのつながりはほつれていく。そして、いつもトゲトゲしく無言のクライヴだけが、彼の崩壊の唯一の目撃者となる。
オリヴィエ賞およびBAFTA受賞の劇作家マイケル・ウィンによる戯曲Cliveは、テクノロジー、孤独、そして「つながり過ぎた」世界でつながり続けようとする苦闘を、ブラックユーモアと切なさで描き出す。ひとりでいることと孤独であることの違いを、私たちがあらためて学んでいる今、Cliveは警鐘であると同時に、痛快なドタバタ喜劇でもある。
