Drive In Troubadour Meridian Waters Enfield brought a distinctive open-air entertainment experience to the Meridian Waters area of Enfield, in north London. Part of the wider Troubadour drive-in series, this event was designed to let audiences enjoy live performances and cinematic-style entertainment from the comfort of their own vehicles, combining the nostalgia of the classic American drive-in format with a distinctly British setting. Troubadour Presents has been a significant name in producing large-scale outdoor events across the United Kingdom, and their Meridian Waters residency formed part of their ongoing mission to bring accessible, community-focused entertainment to areas beyond the traditional West End circuit.
The Troubadour drive-in format offered something genuinely different from a conventional theatre or concert outing. Rather than sitting in an auditorium, audiences parked their cars in designated bays, tuned their radios to a dedicated FM frequency, and experienced sound broadcast directly into their vehicle. The effect created an intimate yet communal atmosphere, with hundreds of cars sharing the same moment together while each group remained in their own private space. For families with young children, those with mobility considerations, or anyone who simply fancied a fresh alternative to indoor venues, the drive-in model provided a welcoming and flexible way to enjoy live entertainment.
Meridian Waters is a large regeneration area in Enfield, in the London Borough of Enfield, situated in the north of Greater London. The area is served by Meridian Water railway station, which sits on the Liverpool Street to Stansted line, making it reachable by rail from central London. For those travelling by car, the site offered on-site parking as an integral part of the drive-in experience itself. Enfield is located beyond the North Circular Road, so visitors travelling from central London should allow extra time for the journey, particularly on Sunday afternoons when the event took place.
Drive-in events of this nature tend to be well suited to a broad range of audiences. Families with children of varying ages generally find the format relaxed and easy to manage, as little ones can move around or sleep in the car without disturbing other audience members. Groups of friends looking for a sociable Sunday outing, as well as couples seeking something a little out of the ordinary, have historically found the drive-in format appealing. Because the event took place on Sundays, it fitted naturally into a weekend leisure schedule for both London residents and visitors staying in the capital for a short break.
If the idea of open-air and non-traditional theatre appeals to you, London and the wider United Kingdom have a rich variety of options worth exploring. Outdoor theatre in parks and unconventional spaces continues to grow in popularity, and several productions each year take entertainment well beyond the walls of a traditional playhouse. You might enjoy browsing other Sunday performance listings on BritishTheatre.com, or exploring open-air and promenade productions in our wider listings. For those interested in immersive and site-specific work, productions staged outside conventional venues offer a similarly adventurous alternative to a standard evening at a West End theatre.
