O Noel Coward Theatre abriu portas a 12 de março de 1903, com o nome de New Theatre, e com a produção inaugural Rosemary. O espetáculo tinha como protagonista Charles Wyndham, o empresário responsável pela construção do teatro. Em 1920, o teatro acolheu I’ll Leave it to You, a primeira peça de Noel Coward. Muitos nomes de peso passariam pelo palco nas décadas de 1920 e 1930, em grande parte graças a produções lendárias protagonizadas por John Gielgud. Em Hamlet, Gielgud contracenou com Jessica Tandy e um jovem Alec Guinness; e, em Romeo and Juliet, partilhou a cena com Peggy Ashcroft, Edith Evans e Laurence Olivier. Durante a Blitz, o teatro tornou-se a casa das companhias do Old Vic e do Sadler’s Wells, que ambas perderam os seus teatros nos bombardeamentos. Permaneceriam ali até que as suas casas fossem reconstruídas nos anos 50. A 30 de junho de 1960 estreou Oliver!, de Lionel Bart, que foi um enorme sucesso e ficou em cena por 2.618 representações. A segunda metade do século XX traria ainda mais grandes nomes ao teatro. Entre os exemplos, contam-se Judi Dench, Roger Rees e Donald Sinden em London Assurance (1974), Trevor Eve em Children of a Lesser God (1981), e Helen Mirren e John Hurt em A Month in the Country (1994). A Royal Shakespeare Company deteve direitos exclusivos para apresentar ali a sua London Season de tragédias (na temporada de 2004/05, esteve em cartaz com Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear e Hecuba). A Delfont Mackintosh Limited adquiriu o teatro em 2005 e, após uma grande remodelação, reabriu-o como Noel Coward Theatre a 1 de junho de 2006, para a estreia londrina de Avenue Q.

The Noel Coward Theatre opened on 12 March 1903 under the name the New Theatre and with an inaugural production of Rosemary. It starred the theatre’s builder Charles Wyndham. In 1920 the theatre I’ll Leave it to You; Noel Coward’s first play.

Many famous names would grace the theatre in the 1920s and 30’s, mainly due to legendary productions starring John Gielgud. In Hamlet, Gielgud acted alongside Jessica Tandy and a young Alec Guinness, and in Romeo and Juliet, he appeared with Peggy Ashcroft, Edith Evans, and Laurence Olivier.

During the Blitz, the theatre became the home of the Old Vic and Sadler’s Well Theatre Companies, who both lose their theatres in the bombings. They would remain there until their theatres were reconstructed in the 50’s. 30 June 1960 saw the opening of Lionel Bart’s Oliver!, which proved a great success and ran for 2,618 performances.

The latter half of the 20th Century would bring more big names into the theatre. Examples include Judi Dench, Roger Rees and Donald Sinden in London Assurance (1974), Trevor Eve in Children of a Lesser God (1981), and Helen Mirren and John Hurt in A Month in the Country (1994). Delfont Mackintosh Limited purchased the theatre in 2005 and, after a major refurbishment, re-opened the theatre as the Noel Coward Theatre on 1 June 2006 for the London premiere of Avenue Q.
