Wycombe Swan opened in November 1992, built by Wycombe District Council as a civic theatre for High Wycombe. The design came from the Buckinghamshire County Architects, with Paul Markcrow as architect, and the building was conceived as a complex rather than a single auditorium, bringing the main theatre together with the Town Hall and the Oak Room on one site off St Mary Street.
That multi-space approach has shaped the venue ever since. The main house seats 1,076, while the Town Hall and Oak Room have carried everything from smaller performances to hires and community events, giving the Swan a range that a single-auditorium theatre could not match.
The theatre was refurbished in the summer of 2010. Management has changed hands over the years, with HQ Theatres running the venue before it passed to Trafalgar Entertainment, and it operates today under Trafalgar Theatres.
Alongside the professional programme, the Swan has built a long-running relationship with young performers in the area through the Wycombe Swan Youth Project, formerly known as the Wycombe Swan Youth Theatre. Open to those aged from 10 to 19, it runs workshops and performance-based activities through the year and stages its own annual production.
Train
High Wycombe railway station is roughly a five minute walk from the theatre. Chiltern Railways serves the station, and its website carries train times and tickets.
Bus
Wycombe Bus Station is less than a 10 minute walk away, and there are several bus stops closer still. Carousel Buses is the main operator in the High Wycombe area, and Buckinghamshire Council publishes up to date timetables and routes.
Parking
The theatre does not have its own car park, but Wycombe Swan Car Park is the closest option, with 323 standard spaces, 13 Blue Badge spaces and 4 electric vehicle bays served by 2 fast chargers. Charges apply from 7am to 8pm and parking is free outside those hours. Blue Badge holders can park free in the adjacent car park, which has level access through to the Ticket Office, the Town Hall and the Oak Room. The car park is not owned by the theatre: queries go to Buckinghamshire Council. For EV charge points, the Zap-Map website or app lists nearby locations.
The main auditorium at Wycombe Swan is arranged over two seating levels, the Stalls and the Circle, with a total of 1,076 seats. It is a comfortable size, so sightlines are generally good throughout.
The ground level, closest to the stage and level with the action. This is where the theatre's wheelchair spaces sit, with room for up to 8 wheelchair users, and it is the level used for access tickets where a customer cannot manage the upper part of the theatre. Central rows a little way back tend to give the most balanced view of a big touring set.
The upper level, reached by stairs or by lift. The raised angle suits large-scale musicals and dance, where you want to take in the full width of the stage and any choreography. Front rows of the Circle often feel closer than you expect in a house of this size.
For comedy and one-person concert shows, the Stalls keep you nearer the performer. For anything with a big ensemble, the Circle rewards you with the whole picture. Both levels have accessible toilets.
Wycombe Swan aims to make every visit workable, and the team will talk through arrangements in advance. The access line is 0343 310 0060.
Additional security checks are carried out at the venue, so it is worth arriving earlier than usual.
