About the show

Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical RENT returns to London's West End for its 30th anniversary at the Duke of York's Theatre, directed by Luke Sheppard and starring Gaten Matarazzo.

Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical RENT returns to the West End for its 30th anniversary, playing a strictly limited season at the Duke of York's Theatre in London. This new staging is directed by 2026 Olivier Award winner Luke Sheppard, and it leads with a headline draw: Gaten Matarazzo, Dustin from Netflix's Stranger Things, making his West End debut as Mark.

What is Rent about?

Inspired by Puccini's La Boheme and set in New York's East Village in the early 1990s, RENT follows a group of young artists and friends across a single year as they chase love, music and meaning while living with poverty, illness and the shadow of the AIDS crisis. Larson's score is a landmark of modern musical theatre, taking in "Seasons of Love", "La Vie Boheme" and "One Song Glory", performed with a live band. The show carries mature themes and is generally recommended for older teenagers and adults.

Who stars in Rent?

Gaten Matarazzo leads the company as Mark, with further casting confirmed ahead of the run.
