What is Hairspray about?

Hairspray is the Tony Award-winning musical set in 1962 Baltimore, where pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on the Corny Collins TV show. When she wins a spot on the show, Tracy becomes an overnight celebrity and uses her new platform to fight for racial integration of the programme. With a score bursting with infectious energy and a message of acceptance and self-confidence, Hairspray is one of the most joyful musicals ever written.

Why see Hairspray?

Hairspray is pure, concentrated happiness. The songs are irresistible, the choreography is exuberant, and the story's message about body positivity, racial equality, and being true to yourself is delivered with such warmth and humour that it feels celebratory rather than preachy. The role of Edna Turnblad, traditionally played by a man in a fat suit, is one of the great comic parts in musical theatre. Audiences leave Hairspray on a high that lasts for days.
