History

The Studio occupies the former ballroom of the New Wimbledon Theatre and has also been known as the Time and Leisure Studio. It has long been a home for small-scale drama and comedy, often ahead of West End or Edinburgh Festival runs, through seasons such as #FromTheFringe and Premieres. In July 2014 it staged the London premiere of Up From Paradise, the only musical written by Arthur Miller, directed by Patrick Kennedy.

The building around it opened on 26 December 1910 as the Wimbledon Theatre, built for the entrepreneur J. B. Mulholland to designs by Cecil Aubrey Massey and Roy Young. After financial difficulties closed the theatre in 2003, the Ambassador Theatre Group took over its management and it reopened as the New Wimbledon Theatre in February 2004. The full story of the main house is on the New Wimbledon Theatre page.
