Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap plays Grand Opera House York on its 75th anniversary UK and Ireland tour, 21–26 June 2027, with Nicholas Bailey and Susan Penhaligon.
The Mousetrap York tickets are for a midsummer week at the Grand Opera House York, where Agatha Christie’s whodunnit plays from Monday 21 to Saturday 26 June 2027 near the end of its 75th anniversary tour. Performances are at 7.30pm from Monday to Saturday, with 2.30pm matinees on Wednesday 23 and Saturday 26 June.
The Mousetrap York at the Grand Opera House on Clifford Street
Few theatres have a stranger origin story. The front of the Grand Opera House began life in 1868 as a corn exchange in red brick Italianate style, and only in 1902 was it joined to a warehouse behind and opened as a theatre, launching with a pantomime starring Florrie Forde. Over the following century it was a music hall, a cinema, a bingo hall and a roller skating rink before returning to live performance. Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Dame Judi Dench, a York native, have all appeared on its stage. The Grade II listed building has a compact, characterful auditorium with Stalls, Dress Circle, Grand Circle and boxes, which suits a play built on close quarters and quiet menace.
Late June in York means long light evenings, tourists on the city walls and riverside drinks along the Ouse. Watching a snowbound murder mystery on the eve of midsummer is a delicious contrast, and the theatre stands just across the road from Clifford’s Tower, a reminder that this is a city with plenty of dark history of its own.
The Mousetrap story
At Monkswell Manor, a country house newly opened as a guesthouse, young owners Mollie and Giles Ralston welcome a group of guests as the snow sets in. The radio reports a murder in London. Soon a police sergeant arrives on skis, convinced that the killer is connected to the house and may strike again. With the roads closed and the telephone dead, everyone becomes a suspect. The audience is asked to leave the theatre with the identity of the murderer locked away, and we keep that promise here.
The Mousetrap tour cast in York
Nicholas Bailey, known for EastEnders, plays Major Metcalf, and Susan Penhaligon, star of A Fine Romance, plays Mrs Boyle and has previously appeared in the London production at St Martin’s. Emily Laing and Jack Hardwick play Mollie and Giles Ralston, Thomas Barrett plays Christopher Wren, Clare Duffy is Miss Casewell, James Peake is Mr Paravicini and Alfie Richards is Detective Sergeant Trotter. The understudies are Ben Gresswell, Sophie Lagden, Judith Rae and Darren Ruston. Hannah Chissick directs, with resident direction by Myles Brown.
BSL signed and audio described Mousetrap York matinee
ATG lists the Saturday 26 June 2027 matinee at 2.30pm as both a BSL signed and an audio described performance. Ask the venue early about the best positions for interpreters and headsets. Our Grand Opera House York venue guide explains seating, access and facilities in more detail.
Running time and ages for The Mousetrap York
The play lasts about 2 hours 5 minutes, including a 20-minute interval, so evening shows finish at around 9.35pm, leaving time for a nightcap in the old city. The producers recommend it for ages 7 and over. There is suspense but nothing graphic, and the Wednesday and Saturday matinees are popular with families and coach groups.
Why Christie still fills theatres
The Mousetrap opened in London in 1952 and has run ever since, making it the longest running play in the world. Our guide to the world’s longest running play explains how a short radio drama grew into a legend, and the original production continues nightly at The Mousetrap at St Martin’s Theatre, a two hour train ride from York.
Getting to the Grand Opera House York
The theatre is on the corner of Clifford Street and Cumberland Street, around fifteen minutes on foot from York station through the city centre. Parking in central York is limited, so the Park and Ride or the train is the easiest option.
The Mousetrap tour in the North
York follows Bath and comes just before Derby, the final stops of the tour. Earlier northern dates included The Mousetrap in Sunderland in March and The Mousetrap in Edinburgh in April. For every date see our Mousetrap UK tour page.
