Originally titled the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties when it opened on 24 December 1904, its inaugural performance was a variety bill. W. S. Gilbert’s final play; The Hooligan was performed in 1911 and on 8 April 1931, the musical comedy White Horse Inn began a run of 651 performances. During the Second World War, it was a canteen for works of the Air Raid Patrol, and Winston Churchill gave a speech from the stage.
From 1961, the theatre began showing movies. This would last seven years, ending with the arrival of the Saddler’s Wells Opera Company. In 1974, the company changed their name to the English National Opera. They would finally purchase the freehold of the building in 1992. An extensive and detailed restoration began in 2000 with the theatre finally re-opening in 2004.
The Theatre houses the widest proscenium arch in London, including an 80-foot wide stage, and one was of the first theatre to have electric lighting. It was also constructed with a revolving stage, though this was rarely used.

For the best all-round experience at the London Coliseum, aim for the centre of the Stalls, roughly the front to middle rows, where the sound is fullest and the stage feels closest. If you would rather take in the whole picture, the front and centre of the Dress Circle gives a clean, panoramic view. As the West End's largest theatre, the Coliseum seats around 2,359 people across four levels: Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle and Balcony, plus a handful of boxes.
| Level | Best for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Stalls | Closest, most immersive view with the best sound | Centre rows are the pick of the house. The very front rows sit low and close, so you look up at the stage. |
| Dress Circle | A full, panoramic view of the whole stage | Front and centre is excellent. The rear rows sit under the Upper Circle overhang and feel distant, and the far sides angle in awkwardly. |
| Upper Circle | Value seats with a complete view of the stage | Set high with a steep rake. Front and centre is fine, but it can feel a long way back for the price. |
| Balcony | The cheapest seats in the house | The highest and most distant level, with a steep rake, tight legroom and a lot of stairs. |
For Kinky Boots, a show built on bold colour, big production numbers and close facial comedy, the centre of the Stalls is the sweet spot, keeping you near the action with balanced sound. If you prefer to see the full stage picture and the ensemble choreography as a whole, the front and centre of the Dress Circle is the strongest alternative and often better value.
The main things to watch at the Coliseum are the overhangs and the sides. The back rows of the Dress Circle sit under the Upper Circle and can feel far from the stage, while the far-side seats in the Dress Circle angle inwards. Front-row seats on the circles have a safety rail that can catch your eyeline, and the Upper Circle and Balcony are high up with a steep rake, so read the seat notes before you commit. The boxes are side-on and better for atmosphere than for a straight view.
The Upper Circle and Balcony carry the lowest prices, sometimes under twenty pounds, and front and central seats on those levels still give a full view of the stage. For a middle option, the rear centre of the Dress Circle offers a comfortable, complete view for less than premium Stalls. If you are not sure which level suits you, our West End seating guide explains how the levels compare. Compare live prices and seat availability across every section at Kinky Boots.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ London Coliseum – The Nutcracker (New Year Performance) 🎄🩰✨ Simply the best ballet we have ever seen. Watching The Nutcracker at the London Coliseum on New Year’s Eve was pure magic. 💫 From the very first scene, the orchestra, the costumes, and the stage design transported us into another world. The dancers were elegant, powerful, and precise – every movement felt effortless and full of emotion. 🎶💃 The Christmas atmosphere combined with the excitement of New Year’s Eve made it even more special. The Snow Scene and the Land of Sweets were absolutely breathtaking. ❄️🍭✨ The Coliseum itself is a beautiful theatre – grand, historic, and perfectly organised. Everything ran smoothly, and the energy in the audience was electric. A magical evening, unforgettable for our family. A true celebration of art, music, and the start of a new year. 🌟 #LondonColiseum #TheNutcracker #BalletMagic #NewYearsEve #FamilyMemories
My husband and I went to see the Akram Khan’s Giselle, a highly acclaimed contemporary ballet performance in London Coliseum which was its last stage show. The theatre is only a few minutes walk away from Leicester Square station. We booked our tickets in advance as the show sells out quickly. The ballet is choreographed by British dancer Akram Khan and performed by the English National Ballet. It’s a bold, contemporary re-imagining of the classic 19th-century ballet Giselle, reshaping the story of love, betrayal, death, and forgiveness for today’s world. We were mesmerised by the beautiful performance and music. Instead of villagers and nobles, Khan’s version focuses on migrant workers and exploitative landlords in a harsh industrial setting, with powerful themes about inequality, marginalisation and compassion. The movement blends classical ballet, contemporary dance, and elements of kathak (a North Indian dance form), creating a unique and visceral physical style. The design and atmosphere are striking: stark industrial sets, haunting lighting, and a new score adapted from the original make it feel more like a dramatic dance-theatre experience than a traditional ballet. We enjoyed every minute. It is worth watching if you like Contemporary dance or modern takes on classics, Ballet with strong dramatic storytelling, Theatre with social themes and emotional depth and Visually striking, intense performances. It’s a piece that’s moved audiences emotionally and critically and stands as one of the most talked-about dance productions of recent years.
A Dream amongst dreams, architecturely and historically its incredible. Its like walking through narnias wardrobe. We visited to watch Nutcracker and fortunate enough to have middle front row seats. It was perfect to see everything close up and next to the orchestra to hear the splendour of music. I welcome anyone to go and visit here especially for Nutcracker but any performances will be magical. Also a big thankyou to the hard working staff who make this experience more special.
Saw the nutcracker here and the performance was spectacular. Touches of whimsy and humor made it original but still classical. The venue is beautiful. Cocktail menu to match the theme was fun, with sugar plum and cinnamon brandy drinks, etc. A really nice evening out.

The best seats are in the centre of the Stalls, around the front to middle rows, where you get the closest, most immersive view and the fullest sound. If you prefer to see the whole stage at once, the front and centre of the Dress Circle is the strongest alternative.
The rear rows of the Dress Circle sit under the Upper Circle overhang and feel distant, and the far-side Dress Circle seats angle inwards. Front-row circle seats have a safety rail in the eyeline, the Upper Circle and Balcony are high with a steep rake, and the boxes are side-on to the stage.
The London Coliseum holds around 2,359 people, making it the largest theatre in the West End. The seats are spread across four levels: Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle and Balcony, along with a small number of boxes.
Yes. A lift in the main foyer reaches every level of the auditorium except the Upper Circle, and there are wheelchair spaces in the Stalls, the Dress Circle and the Stalls boxes, plus transfer seats in the Dress Circle and Balcony. Accessible seating is booked through the box office.
The Upper Circle and Balcony carry the lowest prices, sometimes under twenty pounds, and front and central seats there still give a full view of the stage. For a comfortable middle option, the rear centre of the Dress Circle offers a complete view for less than premium Stalls.
