Harold Pinter's Betrayal is widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century. Inspired by Pinter's own extramarital affair, the play tells the story of a love triangle between Emma, her husband Robert, and Robert's best friend Jerry. What makes the play extraordinary is its reverse chronology: the story begins after the affair has ended and works backwards in time, revealing the layers of deception, self-deception, and silence that sustained the betrayal over seven years.
Pinter's writing is deceptively simple on the surface but devastating in its precision. Every pause, every silence, every seemingly casual remark carries enormous weight. The reverse structure means the audience knows more than the characters at every point, creating an exquisite dramatic irony that makes each scene more painful than the last. West End productions attract major international stars, and the intimacy of the three-hander format means every performance is electrifying.
Betrayal is periodically revived in the West End. Check current listings for the latest production, cast, and venue. The play deals with adult themes of infidelity and emotional betrayal, and is best suited for adult audiences. Running time is approximately ninety minutes, often played without an interval, making it one of the most intense theatrical experiences available.
For more Pinter, look for London productions of The Homecoming or Old Times. For other masterful two and three-handers, consider Skylight by David Hare or explore the current programme at the Harold Pinter Theatre, named in the playwright's honour.
