Scottish Opera's Alcina at Theatre Royal Glasgow: Handel's opera relocated to a nightclub, directed by Olivia Fuchs. Sung in Italian. Book tickets.
Scottish Opera brings Handel's Alcina to Theatre Royal Glasgow in a production that relocates the sorceress's enchanted island to a hedonistic nightclub. Director Olivia Fuchs, previously responsible for The Makropulos Affair, leads the creative team, with Madeline Boreham making her Company debut in the title role.
Alcina holds court at Club Amnesia, bending the minds of the men around her to reshape their reality. When Ruggiero moves her genuinely, her grip on that world begins to loosen, and the arrival of his fiancée in disguise sets off a conflict between feeling and illusion that threatens to bring everything down.
The score contains some of Handel's most celebrated writing, among them the tender 'Verdi prati' and the brilliant 'Tornami a vagheggiar'. All performances are sung in Italian with English surtitles provided to reinforce key dialogue and lyrics.
Conductor Dmitri Jurowski leads the orchestra, with set and costume designs by Yannis Thavoris, whose credits include Marx in London! in 2024, and lighting by Jake Wiltshire, who worked on Albert Herring in the same year.
Alongside Boreham, the cast features three of the company's 2026/27 Emerging Artists, Charlotte Clapperton, Charlotte Jane Kennedy and Luvo Maranti, as well as Emerging Artist alumni Chloe Harris and Edward Jowle, both previously seen in The Marriage of Figaro in 2026.
The running time is 2 hours 30 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. The production carries a 12+ age guidance and contains depictions of drug misuse.
