Scottish Opera's Così fan tutte at Theatre Royal Glasgow features RCS Advanced Artist Diploma singers conducted by John Butt. Book tickets.
Scottish Opera brings a new production of Mozart's Così fan tutte to Theatre Royal Glasgow, conducted by period specialist John Butt and directed by Rebecca Meltzer. The cast is drawn from the Advanced Artist Diploma in Opera programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, placing emerging international singers at the centre of Da Ponte's sharp social comedy, accompanied by The Orchestra of Scottish Opera.
Così fan tutte is Mozart and Da Ponte's dissection of fidelity, disguise and self-deception. Two men, each engaged to a woman of good standing, accept a wager from a cynical companion and spend a single chaotic day testing their partners' constancy through elaborate disguise. Downstairs, the servants seize the chance to manipulate their employers, and what begins as a game of mischief gradually exposes more uncomfortable truths about love and loyalty.
This new staging by Rebecca Meltzer features designs by Kat Heath. John Butt leads The Orchestra of Scottish Opera. The production carries surtitles throughout, designed to reinforce key dialogue and lyrics rather than simply translate.
The singers are hand-picked international artists in the final phase of their professional training through the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's Advanced Artist Diploma in Opera programme, a collaboration that positions the run as both a fully staged Scottish Opera production and a showcase for performers at a critical career threshold.
