Scottish Opera's Turandot at Theatre Royal Glasgow, Sir David McVicar directs Puccini's centenary opera with Stuart Stratford conducting. Book tickets.
Scottish Opera brings Puccini's final opera to Theatre Royal Glasgow in a new co-production with Irish National Opera, directed by Sir David McVicar. Set in a decaying imperial court, Turandot pits a riddle-dealing princess against a reckless prince in a story McVicar frames as a collision between inherited trauma and dangerous desire, conducted by Stuart Stratford.
Sir David McVicar reunites with the creative team behind Scottish Opera's 2023 Il trittico for this centenary staging of Puccini's opera. Rather than softening the work's more troubling elements, McVicar engages directly with Turandot's psychological wounds and Prince Calaf's wilful recklessness, finding a story of two isolated figures caught between terror and longing.
Set designs by Charles Edwards and costumes by Doey Lüthi give the production a gothic grandeur, with lighting by Ben Pickersgill. Stuart Stratford conducts The Orchestra of Scottish Opera. The advertised cast includes Trine Bastrup Møller, Victor Starsky, Insung Sim, and Hye-Youn Lee. The score includes 'Nessun dorma' and 'In questa reggia'.
The performance runs for 2 hours 50 minutes with two intervals, one of 20 minutes and one of 15 minutes. Surtitles are displayed throughout to reinforce key dialogue and lyrics. Age guidance is 12 and above; the production contains nudity.
Theatre Royal Glasgow lists a selected audio-described performance and an associated touch tour. Confirm the designated performance and tour arrangements when booking.
