The Mousetrap Stoke at the Regent Theatre in Hanley

The Regent stands on Piccadilly in Hanley, the busy heart of the Potteries. It opened in 1929 as an Art Deco cinema, one of a family of Regents built around the country, and its white glazed terracotta frontage, with masks of comedy and tragedy at each corner, is still one of the city’s handsomest sights. After decades as the Gaumont and then an Odeon, it was restored and reopened as a full time theatre in 1999, and now seats around 1,600. A play first staged in 1952 feels very much at home in a building of the same era of glamour, and the restored auditorium has the warmth that a fireside mystery needs.

Early March in Staffordshire tends to be raw and wet, a fitting backdrop for a story set in the depths of a snowstorm. The run also brings Christie to a city with deep theatrical roots: the Regent took up the mantle of live drama in Hanley after the old Theatre Royal closed.

What happens in The Mousetrap

Mollie and Giles Ralston have turned a large old house into Monkswell Manor guesthouse, and on opening day the snow begins to fall. One after another their guests arrive, each with an odd manner and a story that does not quite fit. Then comes Detective Sergeant Trotter, battling through the drifts on skis, with news that links the house to a murder in London. Trapped together, the guests start to suspect each other. The ending is the most famous secret in British theatre, and it stays a secret here.
