What Is The Wedding Singer About?
The Wedding Singer is a romantic comedy musical based on the hugely popular 1998 film of the same name, which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Set in the gloriously over-the-top world of 1985 New Jersey, the show follows Robbie Hart, a loveable wedding singer whose life falls apart when his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Just as he hits rock bottom, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with Julia, a sweet waitress who is herself engaged to a wealthy but deeply unsuitable man. What follows is a heartfelt, funny, and thoroughly charming story about second chances, genuine connection, and finding love in unexpected places.
The book, by Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy, keeps the warmth and humour of the original film very much intact, while the score, written by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, delivers an affectionate homage to the sounds of the 1980s. Expect big hair, shoulder pads, synthesisers, and earworm songs that capture the era with wit and genuine affection.
Why Is The Wedding Singer Worth Seeing?
For anyone who grew up in the 1980s or simply has a soft spot for that decade's pop culture, The Wedding Singer is an absolute delight. The show revels in nostalgia without ever becoming lazy about it; the humour is sharp, the characters are genuinely likeable, and the love story at its centre is sweet without being saccharine. The musical numbers are infectiously fun, ranging from tender ballads to full-company pop extravaganzas that are designed to get audiences grinning from ear to ear.
The show also works beautifully for audiences who are new to musical theatre. It is accessible, warm-hearted, and never takes itself too seriously. It is the kind of evening that sends audiences out of the theatre in a thoroughly good mood, which is no small achievement.
The Story Behind the Music and Script
The Wedding Singer first opened on Broadway in 2006, earning several Tony Award nominations including Best Musical. The score draws heavily on the sounds of artists such as Billy Idol, Boy George, and Madonna, without directly replicating them, creating something that feels authentically of its time while remaining an original piece of musical theatre. Songs such as Grow Old with You and Right in Front of Your Eyes give the show genuine emotional depth alongside its considerable comic energy.
Productions of The Wedding Singer have toured extensively across the United Kingdom and have been embraced warmly by regional theatres and amateur dramatic societies alike, testament to the show's broad and enduring appeal.
Practical Information for Visitors
The Wedding Singer is a popular choice for amateur and touring productions at venues across London and the wider United Kingdom. If you are planning a visit, it is worth checking with your specific venue for precise running times, as these can vary between productions. As a general guide, most full productions run for approximately two and a half hours including an interval.
The show is suitable for a wide range of ages and makes for an excellent evening out for groups of friends, couples, and theatre-goers looking for something feel-good and fun. The content is broadly family-friendly, though some mild adult humour means it is best suited to those aged ten and above. Always check with your venue directly for their specific age guidance.
Ticket prices vary considerably depending on the producing company and venue. It is always worth booking in advance, as popular productions sell out quickly, particularly for weekend and Sunday performances.
Similar Shows You Might Enjoy
If The Wedding Singer appeals to you, there are several other feel-good musicals well worth exploring. Fans of 1980s nostalgia and upbeat storytelling often enjoy Mamma Mia!, which similarly uses a beloved pop back catalogue to tell a warm romantic story. Grease shares the same fondness for a specific era and its music, delivering high-energy performances and instantly recognisable songs. For something with a similar romantic comedy heart, Legally Blonde the Musical offers sharp writing, a likeable lead character, and plenty of infectious energy. Those drawn to the 1980s setting might also enjoy Rock of Ages, which plunges even deeper into the decade's rock soundtrack with plenty of knowing humour.
