Jeremy Bowen discusses war reporting and press freedom at Grand Opera House York. Book tickets.
Jeremy Bowen: Truth Under Fire is a live talk at Grand Opera House York in which the BBC's International Editor draws on more than 40 years of reporting across over 90 countries and 20 wars to examine how press freedom is collapsing in conflict zones and what that means for our understanding of the world.
Bowen's reporting has spanned from El Salvador in 1989 to current conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Syria, Sudan and Yemen, a period he describes as representing more simultaneous armed conflicts than at any point in decades. During that career he has interviewed world leaders, documented war crimes and been shot at.
A significant part of the talk addresses how access and information are now controlled. Israel restricts foreign journalists from entering Gaza, Russia shapes the narrative in occupied Ukraine, and governments in Syria and Sudan limit reporters while discrediting those who contradict official accounts. Bowen examines how truth is contested when social media floods audiences with competing claims.
The event is structured in two halves: Bowen's own presentation followed by a section in which the audience may put questions directly to him.
