Waitress is a musical comedy following Jenna, a talented pie-maker longing for a better life, whose world shifts when a new doctor arrives in town. It features music by Grammy award-winning Sara Bareilles, a book by Jessie Nelson, and direction by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus.

The story and creative team

Jenna works as a waitress with a gift for baking pies, and with the support of colleagues Becky and Dawn she works through a difficult personal situation. The show combines warmth and wit with candid themes of love, aspiration and friendship.

The score draws on Sara Bareilles's songwriting, with credits including Love Song and Brave. Jessie Nelson, screenwriter of I Am Sam, wrote the book. Diane Paulus, whose other credits include Pippin and Finding Neverland, directs. The producers describe the creative team as female-led.

Cast and engagements

At Milton Keynes Theatre, Carrie Hope Fletcher, previously seen in Calamity Jane, Heathers and The Addams Family, is advertised as Jenna, with Les Dennis as Old Joe and Evelyn Hoskins as Dawn. At King's Theatre, Glasgow, Les Dennis and Evelyn Hoskins are advertised; the Glasgow source does not list Carrie Hope Fletcher. Both engagements are billed as one week only. Audience considerations

The production contains strong language, themes of domestic abuse and sexual innuendo; parental discretion is advised for children under 13. No under-3s are admitted at either venue, and under-16s must sit next to an adult aged 18 or over and be supervised throughout. At King's Theatre, Glasgow, the runtime is confirmed as Act One seventy minutes, a twenty-minute interval, and Act Two sixty minutes.
