The critically acclaimed production What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank is set to extend its West End run at the Marylebone Theatre. The show, which will conclude its current sold-out run on 23 November, is slated to reopen on 20 January 2025 and will play until 15 February 2025.
This serious comedy, penned by Nathan Englander and based on his acclaimed 2011 short story, is directed by Patrick Marber. It explores profound themes of identity, politics, and the complexities of Jewish identity in contemporary society. Set in present-day Florida, the play provocatively delves into discussions about Gaza, Israel, the Holocaust, and marriage through the interactions of two Jewish couples—one secular and the other ultra-Orthodox.
The cast includes Joshua Malina, making his London theatre debut as Phil, alongside Caroline Catz as Debbie, Dorothea Myer-Bennett as Shoshana, Simon Yadoo as Yerucham, and Gabriel Howell as Trevor. Mercedes Bahleda will temporarily step into the role of Shoshana from 20 to 25 January.
The design team features Anna Fleischle for set design, Sally Ferguson for lighting, and David Gregory for sound, ensuring that the production's aesthetic complements its thought-provoking narrative.
Patrick Marber, known for directing the Olivier and Tony Award-winning Leopoldstadt, expressed his pleasure at the play's extension, noting the extraordinary reception from audiences and critics alike. Nathan Englander also shared his excitement about continuing the show’s journey in London, praising the Marylebone Theatre for being an exceptional venue for this play.
With rave reviews from major publications and a storyline that challenges and entertains, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank promises to be an essential ticket for theatre-goers in the new year.
