Venue
24-26 George St, Oxford OX1 2AG

There has been a theatre on this corner of George Street since 1836. The first, known locally as the Vic and later the Theatre Royale, was barred from staging plays during university terms, so its lessee turned to concerts and music hall instead. By 1880 the building had fallen into disrepair.
Townspeople and figures connected with the University of Oxford then raised funds for a theatre open to university and town players as well as professionals. The second New Theatre, designed by Harry Drinkwater and seating around 1,000, opened in February 1886 when the Oxford University Dramatic Society staged Twelfth Night. Fire damaged the building in 1892, and a renovation in 1908 lifted capacity to about 1,200. Charles Dorrill, who had started in the box office in 1886, became manager in 1908 as the Dorrill family took over; after his sudden death in 1912 his 18 year old son Stanley stepped in and stayed for 47 years.
In 1933 Stanley Dorrill set out to build the most luxurious and comfortable house of entertainment in England, commissioning the Sunderland theatre architects William and T. R. Milburn, whose other work included the Sunderland Empire and London's Dominion. They worked with T. P. Bennett and Sons on an Art Deco interior, originally in deep browns with gilt friezes. The third theatre reopened in February 1934 with a revolving stage and room for around 2,000 people. During the Second World War roughly half a million troops were entertained free of charge here, work for which Stanley Dorrill received an MBE, and the annual pantomimes drew stars including Danny La Rue, Des O'Connor, Billy Fury, Lulu and Alvin Stardust.
The Dorrill family ran the theatre for 64 years until Howard and Wyndham's took over in 1972. Apollo Leisure leased it in 1977 and renamed it the Apollo, a name it kept through changes of owner until a refurbishment in 2003 restored the original title of the New Theatre. The Ambassador Theatre Group bought the venue in 2009, and it remains in ATG Entertainment's hands today.
Train
Oxford railway station is roughly a ten minute walk from the theatre. Check National Rail Enquiries for times before you travel.
Bus
There is no parking or dropping off on George Street without a permit. Coaches and minibuses need a permit to enter Oxford city centre, issued for specific performances; applications are made by calling 0845 634 4466.
Parking
The theatre does not have its own car park and parking in central Oxford is limited. A temporary £5 congestion charge has applied on some central roads near the theatre (7am to 7pm daily); check Oxford City Council for the current position before driving in. Oxford City Council and the Park and Ride websites are the best places to check current options before you set off.
The auditorium is arranged over more than one level, and every section is reached by steps, so it is worth thinking about stairs as well as sightlines when you choose.
The ground level closest to the stage, and the area the venue recommends for anyone who wants a closer view, including customers with limited vision. The four wheelchair positions sit at the rear of the Stalls, each with a companion seat, and are reached by the wheelchair lift. Accessible toilets are in the main foyer and at the front right of the Stalls.
Seats above the Stalls give a wider view of the full stage picture, which suits big touring musicals and dance. Bear in mind the climb, as there is no lift to these sections. The Balcony is reached by stairs only and is steep, so it may not suit anyone with vertigo.
Seats have 44cm (17 inches) between static armrests. If you are unsure, the operator's website has a view from seat tool on its seating map so you can check the sightline before booking through the venue's official box office.
There is level access to the box office and main foyer on George Street, and the doors can be opened automatically using a push button.
ATG's Accessibility Assistance line is 0333 009 5399 (Typetalk 1800 1 0333 009 5399). Joining the free Access Membership Scheme allows you to book accessible seats online and, if eligible, essential companion tickets.

It is at 24-26 George Street in central Oxford, OX1 2AG. The main entrance, box office and foyer are all on George Street.
Oxford railway station is about a ten minute walk away, so the train is the simplest option for most visitors. There is no dropping off on George Street without a permit, and coaches or minibuses must apply for a performance-specific permit on 0845 634 4466.
The theatre has no car park of its own and parking in central Oxford is limited. A temporary £5 congestion charge has applied on some central roads near the theatre from 7am to 7pm daily, so check the Oxford City Council and Park and Ride websites before driving in.
The auditorium holds around 1,785 people, which its operator describes as making it the largest live entertainment venue in the region.
There is level access to the box office and foyer on George Street, and a wheelchair accessible lift down to the Stalls, where four wheelchair positions with companion seats are located at the rear. Accessible toilets are in the main foyer and front right-hand Stalls, and the venue uses the Mobile Connect hearing system; the accessibility line is 0333 009 5399.
The Stalls are recommended for a closer view of the stage and are the area served by the wheelchair lift, while the upper levels give a wider view of the whole stage but involve steps. The operator's seating map includes a view from seat tool if you want to check before booking.
A theatre has stood on this George Street corner since 1836, and the present building, designed by William and T. R. Milburn with an Art Deco interior by T. P. Bennett and Sons, opened in February 1934. It was known as the Apollo from 1977 until a 2003 refurbishment restored the New Theatre name.
New Theatre Oxford has a capacity of 1,785 — small enough to feel intimate but large enough to host major productions.
