Scottish Ballet's Cinders! at Theatre Royal Glasgow: Hampson's Cinderella retelling with variable romantic casting and live Prokofiev. Book tickets.
Scottish Ballet brings its playful retelling of the Cinderella story, Cinders!, to Theatre Royal Glasgow, with Prokofiev's score performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Choreographed by Christopher Hampson CBE and designed by Elin Steele, this revival expands the production's casting possibilities, making the central romance variable from performance to performance.
The action unfolds in a family-run emporium at the turn of the twentieth century. When tragedy leaves Cinders orphaned, control of the shop passes to the formidable Mrs Thorne, whose three unpleasant children transform the once-cherished store into something altogether more gaudy. The announcement of a Royal Ball sends the Thorne household into comic disarray, while Cinders finds solace in an enchanted rose garden before being transformed in time for the event.
Costumes and sets are by Elin Steele, with video design by Hayley Egan and lighting by Lawrie McLennan.
The production's most distinctive quality is its variable casting of the central romance. On some nights Cinders is a woman paired with a Prince; on others, a man paired with a Princess. This revival introduces additional pairings: certain performances place a male Cinders alongside a Prince, or a female Cinders alongside a Princess.
Casting details can be made available in advance for those who wish to know, though the company suggests experiencing the surprise as part of the production itself.
