The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town arrives at Norman Bragg Studio, Aylesbury as a brand-new stage play. Explore booking details.
Spike Milligan's and Ronnie Barker's Victorian parody serial gets a newly adapted stage life at the Norman Bragg Studio, Aylesbury. Adapted by John Hewer and presented by Hambledon Productions, it marks fifty years since the original 1976 broadcast.
Victorian London is troubled by a cloaked figure dispatching members of the upper classes with a rotten raspberry. Inspector Corner of the Yard and his sidekick Sergeant Bowles pursue the din-making Phantom through dark alleyways and moonlit graveyards. Whether the Phantom will be uncloaked, or will simply uncloak himself, gives the plot its gleefully circular logic.
The piece uses Jack the Ripper mythology as a framework for sustained parody, drawing on the surreal absurdism, quick-fire wordplay and near-the-knuckle ribaldry associated with Milligan and Barker's collaborative writing.
John Hewer's adaptation is presented by Hambledon Productions with the authorisation of Spike Milligan Productions Ltd and Handles for Forks Ltd, making it an officially sanctioned stage version. This is a newly constructed stage play, not a screening or tribute concert.
