A stage musical built around the songs of Amy Winehouse is in development for the West End, according to a report from Variety on 22 October 2026 that The Guardian and WhatsOnStage have since followed up. It is very early days: there is no title, no theatre, no dates and no announced cast. Here is what has been reported so far.
What has actually been reported?
Variety says the project is in its early stages and that Broadway producer Catherine Schreiber, whose credits include Cabaret, Rent and the stage adaptation of High School Musical, is understood to be involved. The same report says casting is said to be underway.
The Guardian repeated the key points, describing Schreiber as a Tony award winning producer attached to the project according to Variety, and noting that casting is reported to be under way. Neither outlet has published a statement from the people involved; Variety said representatives for Schreiber and the Winehouse family had not responded by its press time.
Is the family involved?
Reportedly, yes. Variety and The Guardian both say Mitch Winehouse, the singer's father, who oversees her estate, is believed to be involved. Both suggest that this makes it likely the show would feature her best known songs. Variety adds that Mitch Winehouse had discussed the idea of a stage musical as far back as 2017.
Has any work been done on it yet?
WhatsOnStage reports that it has been following the project for a while, and that workshop details listed on performers' Spotlight profiles suggest development sessions have been taking place with increasing regularity. According to WhatsOnStage, those workshops were led by an award winning director with a strong track record in large scale new plays and musicals, though it has not been confirmed whether that director would stage the finished show. No director has been named publicly.
Will it tell her life story?
That has not been decided, or at least not announced. Variety says it is unclear whether the musical would follow her life, in the way that Tina: The Tina Turner Musical did, or set her songs to an original story, in the manner of Mamma Mia!. WhatsOnStage likewise says the form of the piece has not been confirmed.
Why is this coming up now?
The news arrives during a week of celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Back to Black, the 2006 album that brought Winehouse worldwide fame. On Wednesday 21 October the Roundhouse in Camden hosted Back to Black 20, a concert led by the album's original producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi with The Amy Winehouse Band, featuring guest singers including Jorja Smith, Corinne Bailey Rae, FLO, Lianne La Havas and Jessie Reyez, according to the Roundhouse and the BBC. The BBC says a recording will be shown on BBC Two and broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Monday 26 October.
Winehouse died in 2011, aged 27. In a short career she won six Grammy Awards, a Brit Award and three Ivor Novello Awards, as WhatsOnStage notes.
When could tickets go on sale?
There is nothing to book yet, and no timeline has been reported. A musical at this stage can take a long time to reach a West End stage. We will report any official announcement of a title, venue, dates or cast as soon as it is made public. To hear about it, sign up to the British Theatre newsletter.
What can I see in the meantime?
If you love a show built on a great pop catalogue, two long running London favourites are playing now. Mamma Mia! weaves the songs of ABBA into a sunny story at the Novello Theatre, while Moulin Rouge! The Musical packs decades of hits into a dazzling night at the Piccadilly Theatre.
