A new video starring Daniel Casey has been released for the second UK and Ireland tour of Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift, and it confirms that Casey is back in the role of Inspector Tom Barnaby when the stage whodunnit returns in spring 2027.
The tour opens at The Alexandra in Birmingham on Friday 23 April 2027 and visits 14 venues across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland before finishing at Theatre Royal, Newcastle on Saturday 31 July. Further casting is still to be announced.
We first reported the second tour in June, when Casey's return was confirmed. Now every date and venue is in, along with the new video.
A new video for the 2027 tour
The video stars Casey as Barnaby, the role he took on when the production had its world premiere at Richmond Theatre in October 2025. That first tour of the UK and Ireland broke records and won strong reviews, and producers Nicholson Green Productions and Colin Ingram Ltd are now taking the show back on the road.
The timing is neat. Spring 2027 marks 40 years since Caroline Graham's novel was published, and the same year brings the 30th anniversary of the television pilot that launched the ITV series. The production shares news and videos as MidsomerOnStage on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
Daniel Casey is back as Barnaby
Casey is best known to viewers as Sergeant Gavin Troy, the role he played on television from 1997 to 2008 alongside John Nettles as the original Barnaby. On stage he has stepped up to play the senior detective himself.
He said: “Since returning to the world of Midsomer last October, it has been such a delight to see the incredible reaction of people around the UK and Ireland to our theatre version of The Killings at Badger's Drift. One of the highlights of last year's tour was having my lovely friend and mentor John Nettles come and see the show in Truro, getting his seal of approval was hugely important to me.”
He added: “Thank you to all those people from all over the UK and around the world who have shown such love for the play, and I can't wait to bring it to a whole new audience in some wonderful new venues in 2027.”
His theatre work includes Professor Plum in Cluedo on tour, Roger in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time at the National Theatre and Bernard in Yes, Prime Minister at Theatr Clwyd. On screen he has appeared in Emmerdale, EastEnders, Coronation Street, Casualty and Our Friends in the North.
What happens in the story?
When well loved spinster Emily Simpson is found dead in a picturesque English village, her friend Lucy Bellringer refuses to accept it was an accident. Barnaby and Troy are called in, and their investigation uncovers secret passions, old grudges and deadly rivalries behind the chocolate box cottages.
Expect eccentric villagers, sharp twists and a final reveal in the classic style. The play is based on Graham's novel and on the television series made by Bentley Productions for ITV in association with All3Media International.
Who is behind the production?
Guy Unsworth adapts and directs. His earlier stage adaptations include a reimagined Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, which toured the UK three times. Design is by David Woodhead, lighting by Matt Haskins, sound by Ella Wahlström and music by Max Pappenheim, with casting by Ginny Schiller CDG.
