English National Ballet brings Rudolf Nureyev's Romeo & Juliet to Liverpool Empire and Palace Theatre Manchester. Created for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977 and now in its 50th anniversary year, the production sets Shakespeare's Veronese story against Prokofiev's score, performed live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic.

The production

The ballet follows Shakespeare's plot from the simmering rivalry between the Montague and Capulet families through to the fatal outcome of the lovers' story, set against Renaissance Verona. The running time is two hours and fifty-five minutes.

The English National Ballet Philharmonic performs Prokofiev's score live throughout, including the Dance of the Knights.

Audience considerations

Both venues carry an age guidance of 10 and above. The story involves family conflict and ends in tragedy, which is worth bearing in mind for younger attendees. The running time of nearly three hours is also worth factoring into plans.
