Welcome to Storywood: a 1-hour creative writing workshop for ages 9+ at Grand Opera House York, led by the Thread Keeper. Explore booking details.
Welcome to Storywood is a one-hour creative writing workshop for participants aged 9 and over, held at Grand Opera House York. Guided by the mysterious Thread Keeper, young storytellers explore classic fairytales and use imaginative discussion, drawing and writing to build original stories of their own.
Each session centres on a different timeless tale, possibilities named in the source include Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Peter Pan, but the aim is never simply to retell a familiar plot. Participants are encouraged to ask 'What if...?', examine a story from unexpected angles, and invent their own characters before following those ideas wherever they lead. The Thread Keeper frames Storywood as a place where no single version of a story is definitive.
Alongside writing, sessions incorporate creative discussion and drawing. Every attendee leaves with a specially illustrated journal containing activities, creative prompts and blank space designed to sustain writing beyond the session itself.
The workshop is for ages 9 and above and runs for one hour at Grand Opera House York. Because each session explores a different tale, it is worth checking in advance which story a particular session covers.
