Stephen Daldry's National Theatre production of An Inspector Calls is heading back on the road. J B Priestley's thriller opens a UK and Ireland tour at Alexandra Palace Theatre in London on Friday 3 September 2027, playing there for three weeks until 25 September, then visits 22 more venues before it finishes at Leeds Grand Theatre on Saturday 27 May 2028.
Presented by PW Productions, the tour follows the production's last visit to theatres around the country in 2024 and 2025. It takes in Belfast and Dublin, Edinburgh, Cardiff and a two week stay at The Lowry in Salford, with further venues and casting still to be announced.
On sale dates
Several venues are already selling, and two more join them this Friday. The Gaiety Theatre in Dublin goes on sale on Friday 30 October 2026, as does Norwich Theatre Royal, where general sale opens at 10am that day after earlier priority windows for its Friends. In Edinburgh, the King's Theatre opened general sale on Tuesday 27 October.
The official tour listings show Cardiff, Shrewsbury, Sunderland, Wolverhampton and Leeds as on sale soon, so it is worth checking each venue for its own date.
The production
First staged at the National Theatre in 1992, Daldry's staging has won 19 major awards, including four Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards, and has been seen by more than six million theatregoers worldwide. Ian MacNeil's design, which perches the Birling family home above a rain soaked street, is one of the most recognisable images in British theatre.
The creative team is completed by lighting designer Rick Fisher, composer Stephen Warbeck and associate director Charlotte Peters.
What the director says
Daldry said: “When we first created An Inspector Calls at the National Theatre in 1992, none of us could have imagined that we would still be touring the production 35 years later. It’s extraordinary that Priestley’s play continues to resonate so strongly with audiences, and perhaps more importantly, that its message remains as relevant today as ever.”
He added: “I’m delighted that a new generation of audiences will have the opportunity to experience it on this latest tour.”
The story
When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigation into the death of a young woman. Each revelation shakes the family's account of their own lives.
