Shakespeare’s Globe has confirmed the cast for Julius Caesar in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, where Kate Duchêne and Caoilfhionn Dunne lead a cast of just four actors this winter. Joe Hill-Gibbins directs the tragedy, which runs from Friday 6 November 2026 to Sunday 14 February 2027 and marks the play’s debut in the candlelit indoor theatre. Julius Caesar tickets are on sale now on British Theatre.

Who is in the cast?

With only four performers to carry a political drama crowded with senators, soldiers and citizens, some of the doubling is bold. Duchêne takes on three parts, playing Julius Caesar himself as well as the Soothsayer and Octavius Caesar. She returns to the Globe after appearing there in Henry VIII.

Dunne plays Brutus, the reluctant conspirator at the heart of the play. Her stage work includes A Small and Quiet Light at the Orange Tree Theatre and Chichester’s Minerva Theatre, The Crucible at The Yard Theatre, and Dear Elizabeth and Suzy Storck at the Gate Theatre.

Adam Gillen is Mark Antony. He is another familiar face on Bankside, with earlier Globe credits in I, Joan, Henry VIII and Romeo and Juliet. Natey Jones completes the quartet as Cassius, following stage roles in Pressure at Brixton House, The Harder They Come at Stratford East, Titus Andronicus for the RSC and Hampstead Theatre, and The Grapes of Wrath at the National Theatre.

What is the play about?

In the corridors of the Roman Senate, a plot to kill Julius Caesar takes shape among those who fear the dictator’s growing ambition. Brutus is persuaded to join Cassius and the conspirators, but after the killing the mood of the people swings against them, and the struggle for control of Rome tips into civil war.

The Globe describes this staging as a brutal and timely tale of friendship, betrayal and political violence, and invites theatregoers to take their place as citizens of Rome. The play contains depictions of war, suicide and violence, and all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

The creative team

Hill-Gibbins returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse after directing Ghosts there, and is also credited as adaptor. A former deputy artistic director of the Young Vic, his work spans the Almeida, the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House. Rosanna Vize designs, with candlelight design by Charles Balfour and music from Minihi, the percussion duo of Louise Anna Duggan and Zands Duggan. Joana Nastari is movement and intimacy director, Lucy Wray is associate director and dramaturg, Annemette Verspeak is voice and text coach, and casting is by Becky Paris CDG with Alice Walters.

Dates, venue and tickets

Julius Caesar launches the Globe’s 2026 to 2027 winter season and opens officially on Tuesday 17 November. The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse sits within the Globe on Bankside, at 21 New Globe Walk, London SE1 9DT. Opened in 2014 and modelled on the indoor playhouses of Shakespeare’s day, it is a galleried wooden room lit almost entirely by candles, which suits a play so full of whispered plotting. Southwark and London Bridge are the nearest Underground stations. Read more on our Sam Wanamaker Playhouse page. We covered the wider season when it was announced in July: Shakespeare’s Globe announces four new productions for the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

British Theatre has performances on sale from 9 November 2026 through to the final show on 14 February 2027. See Julius Caesar dates and tickets.
