Captain Jack Sparrow has his crew. Secret Cinema has named the initial cast for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Immersive Adventure, its new show at Greenwich Peninsula, with Olivier Award winner George Maguire leading as Jack Sparrow. Extra performances have also been added, and the run now continues until Saturday 6 June 2027, which opens up plenty of spring dates for anyone who has not yet booked.
Who is in the cast?
George Maguire plays Captain Jack Sparrow, with Phil Daniels as Captain Barbossa. Lily Blunsom is Elizabeth Swann, Harrison Wilde is Will Turner and Gleanne Purcell-Brown is Anamaria. Andrew Pepper (Ragetti) and Dan Starkey (Pintel) are also listed on the show's official cast page, and more casting is due, with roles including Gibbs and Norrington yet to be named.
Maguire won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for playing Dave Davies of the Kinks in the West End. He has since played Marc Bolan on a UK tour, and on screen his credits include EastEnders, Prime Suspect and Borgia. A swaggering, unpredictable pirate captain should suit an actor with his rock and roll energy very well.
Phil Daniels brings decades of experience to Barbossa. Best known to many as Jimmy in Quadrophenia and Kevin Wicks in EastEnders, he has a long list of stage credits in Stratford and on the South Bank, and his voice is all over the Blur anthem Parklife. Gleanne Purcell-Brown arrives fresh from The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, while Harrison Wilde has danced and sung his way through several big London shows and international tours.
What kind of show is it?
The show is built around the 2003 film that launched the series, but it is not a screening. Live performance leads the way, with stunts, projections, spectacle and live music, and the action plays out all around you rather than on a single stage. You can explore the sets, meet the characters, join in with pirate training and even try a game of liar's dice, and food and drink are served throughout.
Matt Costain, Secret Cinema's creative director, is part of the team behind it, and Merritt Baer, the artistic director, has promised something bigger than anything the brand has tried before. "We've taken everything Secret Cinema does best and pushed it further than ever before, creating a new kind of theatrical experience where the story doesn't just happen in front of you, it happens all around you," Baer said.
When does it run, and which dates should you choose?
Performances begin on Tuesday 16 February 2027, and the extra dates now take the run through to Saturday 6 June 2027. The early weeks are where demand is likely to be fiercest, so the newly added spring performances are worth a look if you want more choice of day and time.
There are a pair of ways to see it. Standing general admission, from £49, lets you roam freely around the world of the show. Seated tickets, from £69, give you a dedicated seat to return to whenever you want a break from exploring. Doors open an hour before each performance, so arrive early to settle in, eat and soak up the atmosphere.
How do you get there?
The venue is a purpose-built space on the Greenwich Peninsula, about a five minute walk from North Greenwich station on the Jubilee line. Plenty of buses stop at the station, and Uber Boat by Thames Clippers services call at North Greenwich pier, which makes arriving on the water a fitting start to an evening with pirates.
Dressing up is strongly encouraged, whether as a pirate, a smuggler or a well dressed member of the gentry, so dig out your best tricorn hat before you set sail.
