David Mamet's Bitter Wheat is a savage comedy about a powerful Hollywood mogul who abuses his position to exploit young women. Inspired by the Harvey Weinstein scandal that ignited the #MeToo movement, the play follows Barney Fein, a monstrous figure of entitlement and predation, as his carefully constructed empire of intimidation begins to crumble. Mamet's trademark rapid-fire dialogue and dark humour are deployed to dissect the machinery of power and complicity in the entertainment industry.
Mamet is one of the great American playwrights, and his ear for the rhythms of power, manipulation, and self-deception is unmatched. Bitter Wheat is uncomfortable, deliberately provocative, and sharply funny. The lead role demands a commanding performance, and London productions have attracted major stars to play Barney Fein. This is theatre that engages directly with one of the most important cultural reckonings of our time.
Bitter Wheat is periodically revived in London. Check current listings for the latest production and venue. The play contains strong language and deals with themes of sexual harassment and abuse of power. It is strictly for adult audiences. Running time is approximately one hour and forty-five minutes.
For more Mamet, look for London productions of Glengarry Glen Ross or Oleanna. For other plays about power and its abuse, consider The Crucible or explore the current programme at the Royal Court Theatre.
