What is Electra about?
Sophocles' ancient Greek tragedy tells the story of Electra, daughter of the murdered King Agamemnon, who waits and plans for vengeance against her mother Clytemnestra and stepfather Aegisthus, who conspired to kill her father. When her brother Orestes returns from exile, the siblings together enact the violent justice that Electra has dreamed of for years. The play is a searing exploration of grief, justice, revenge, and what happens when the desire for retribution consumes a human soul entirely.
Why see Electra?
Greek tragedy in London is a rare and powerful theatrical experience. Modern productions strip away the museum-piece approach and reveal stories that are as raw and relevant as anything written today. Electra is one of the great female roles in the classical repertoire, demanding extraordinary emotional range and stamina, and London productions consistently attract outstanding leading performances. The play asks questions about justice and violence that have no easy answers.
Practical information for visitors
Electra appears in London productions at West End and Off-West End venues. Check current listings for the latest revival. The play contains themes of murder, violence, and intense emotional suffering that make it suitable only for older teenagers and adults. Running times vary by production, typically between ninety minutes and two hours.
