What Is Hand to God About?
Hand to God is a darkly comic play that takes place in a small Christian community in Cypress, Texas, where a church youth theatre group is rehearsing a puppet show intended to spread wholesome values. At the centre of the story is Jason, a shy and grieving teenager who has recently lost his father. As Jason struggles to process his loss within a family that is quietly falling apart, something unexpected begins to happen with his hand puppet, Tyrone. What starts as an outlet for Jason's frustration soon becomes something far more sinister, as Tyrone develops a foul-mouthed, anarchic personality entirely his own, or so it seems.
The play weaves together grief, repressed desire, religious hypocrisy, and adolescent rage into a wildly funny and genuinely unsettling piece of theatre. Around Jason orbit his well-meaning but struggling mother, a pastor offering comfort that isn't entirely selfless, and a school bully who is used to getting his own way. The puppet, however, refuses to play by anyone's rules.
Written by American playwright Robert Askins, the play premiered Off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway in 2015, where it received Tony Award nominations. It has since been produced to considerable acclaim in the United Kingdom.
Why Is Hand to God Worth Seeing?
Hand to God is a genuinely surprising piece of theatre. It arrives looking like a comedy, and it is frequently very funny, but it earns those laughs through sharp, intelligent writing that never shies away from darkness. The conceit of a possessed hand puppet could easily feel gimmicky, yet in practice it becomes a surprisingly effective theatrical device for exploring the parts of ourselves we suppress in polite, religious, or family company.
The play has a riotous energy and a willingness to offend, but it always serves the story. Audiences who enjoy theatre that challenges as well as entertains will find a great deal to appreciate here. It is the kind of show that provokes genuine discussion long after the curtain comes down.
Practical Information for Visitors
Hand to God runs for approximately two hours, which typically includes an interval. Prospective audience members should be aware that the show contains strong language, adult themes, and scenes of a sexual nature. It is not suitable for children or younger teenagers, and parental discretion is strongly advised for anyone under the age of sixteen.

Similar Shows You Might Enjoy
If the blend of dark comedy, family dysfunction, and sharp social satire in Hand to God appeals to you, there are several other productions worth exploring. The Book of Mormon shares a similar willingness to use irreverent humour to probe faith and community, and remains one of the most popular shows in the West End. August: Osage County offers another unflinching portrait of a family in crisis, with pitch-black comedy running throughout. For something with a similarly anarchic puppet-based sensibility, Avenue Q is a beloved musical that uses its puppet characters to explore adult anxieties with warmth and wit. All three are well worth your time if Hand to God left an impression.
