What is Misty about?
Misty is an award-winning play by Arinzé Kene that defies easy categorisation. Part spoken word, part gig theatre, part confessional monologue, the show follows a young Black playwright trying to write a play about gentrification in London while the city around him changes beyond recognition. As the pressure mounts from producers who want him to write a particular kind of "Black play," the boundaries between the writer, his characters, and his audience begin to dissolve in unexpected and exhilarating ways.
Why see Misty?
Misty is one of the most original and electrifying pieces of theatre to emerge from London in recent years. Kene's performance is magnetic, the live music is extraordinary, and the show's refusal to be the kind of play anyone expects it to be becomes the point. It is a play about London, about race, about gentrification, and about the politics of storytelling itself. If you want to see something that pushes the boundaries of what theatre can be, Misty is essential.
Practical information for visitors
Misty is periodically revived in London. Check current listings for the latest production and venue. The show contains strong language and deals with themes of race and gentrification. It is best suited for older teenagers and adults. Running time is approximately ninety minutes without an interval.
