Scottish Opera's Fidelio at Theatre Royal Glasgow, sung in German with English surtitles, part of a 2027 Beethoven bicentenary programme. Book tickets.
Scottish Opera presents Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera, at Theatre Royal Glasgow as part of a 2027 programme in which Scotland's orchestras and national opera company unite to mark 200 years since the composer's death.
Fidelio stands apart from Beethoven's instrumental catalogue as his sole opera. Leonore suspects her husband Florestan has been secretly imprisoned by a corrupt nobleman, and so takes a job alongside the gaoler Rocco under the assumed name Fidelio. Her diligence earns Rocco's respect and the affections of his daughter, while she works quietly towards Florestan's freedom. The Prisoners' Chorus is among the score's most celebrated passages.
The opera is sung in German, with English surtitles and dialogue. Ruth McKnight provides the dialogue translation.
Director Ruth Knight works alongside designers Yannis Thavoris, associated with Marx in London! in 2024, and Alisa Kalyanova. Julia Sporsén, who appeared in Scottish Opera's Nixon in China in 2020, takes the role of Leonore / Fidelio, with Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy, previously seen in The Makropulos Affair in 2025, cast as Florestan.
The running time is 2 hours 25 minutes, including a 20-minute interval.
