What is The Scottsboro Boys about?
The Scottsboro Boys is a musical by Kander and Ebb (the team behind Chicago and Cabaret) that tells the true story of nine Black teenagers falsely accused of assaulting two white women on a train in 1930s Alabama. The case became one of the most important civil rights milestones in American history. The musical makes the bold and provocative choice to tell this story through the framework of a minstrel show, deliberately using the racist theatrical tradition to expose and confront the racism at the heart of the case.
Why see The Scottsboro Boys?
This is one of the most powerful and provocative musicals of the twenty-first century. The decision to frame a story of racial injustice within the minstrel show format is deeply uncomfortable by design, forcing audiences to confront how entertainment and racism have been intertwined throughout American history. The score is outstanding, the performances are extraordinary, and the production makes you think as hard as it makes you feel. It is the last work by one of musical theatre's greatest composing teams.
