English National Opera presents a new production of Puccini’s Tosca at the London Coliseum, running from 30 October to 11 December 2026 for 13 performances. Grammy Award winning soprano Axelle Fanyo makes her ENO debut as the opera singer Floria Tosca, with tenor Chaz’men Williams-Ali as her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi. ENO Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon directs, following her Olivier Award winning production of Dead Man Walking in 2025. Her staging sets the story inside a concert hall in an unnamed European state torn by civil conflict and threatened by foreign aggression at its borders, drawing sharp parallels between art, war and political oppression.

Tosca at the London Coliseum: the story and what to expect

Against a backdrop of escalating conflict, Tosca plans a secret meeting with Cavaradossi. When the corrupt police chief Scarpia intervenes, a place of music and art becomes a site of fear and violence, and Tosca is forced to fight for her love and her life. Puccini’s score moves from sweeping romance to genuine suspense, with famous arias including Tosca’s Vissi d’arte and Cavaradossi’s E lucevan le stelle.

The opera is sung in English in a translation by Amanda Holden, with surtitles above the stage, so every twist of the plot lands. That makes it a welcoming first opera as well as a fresh take for regulars. Tosca is also the first half of a pair: Adriana Mater, opening on 28 November, is its sister production, and on Saturday 5 December you can see the Tosca matinee followed by Adriana Mater in the evening.

Axelle Fanyo sings Tosca and Chaz’men Williams-Ali sings Cavaradossi. The role of Scarpia is shared: Christopher Purves sings it from 30 October to 19 November, and bass baritone Craig Colclough from 21 November to 11 December. Harewood Artist Alaric Green is Angelotti and Robert Hayward, one of the UK’s leading dramatic bass baritones, is the Sacristan. Harewood Artists Osian Wyn Bowen and Steffan Lloyd Owen sing Spoletta and Sciarrone, with Christopher Nairne as Sciarrone on 10 and 12 November, and Ronald Nairne is the Gaoler.

Ben Glassberg conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of ENO, returning to the company after his 2022 La bohème. Rosanna Vize designs the set, Evie Gurney the costumes and Lee Curran the lighting, with movement direction by Imogen Knight. The Children’s Chorus comes from Marlborough Primary School through an ENO Engage partnership.

• Evening performances start at 7.30pm on 30 October, 5, 10, 12, 19 and 27 November and 2, 9 and 11 December.
• Performances on 7 and 21 November start at 6pm.
• Monday 30 November starts at 5pm and is a relaxed performance.
• Saturday 5 December is a 1.30pm matinee.
• Tuesday 10 November is a British Sign Language interpreted performance.
