What is Violet the Musical about?
Violet is a musical based on the short story The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts. Set in 1964, the story follows Violet Karl, a young woman with a prominent facial scar from a childhood accident, as she travels by bus from North Carolina to Oklahoma to be healed by a television evangelist. Along the way, she meets two soldiers and discovers that the journey itself, not the destination, may hold the healing she seeks. The folk-influenced score by Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley is one of the finest in contemporary musical theatre.
Why see Violet?
Tesori's score is extraordinary, blending folk, gospel, blues, and country into a sound that perfectly captures the American South of the 1960s. The lead role demands a performer of exceptional emotional range — Violet must be tough, vulnerable, funny, and heartbreaking, often within the same scene. The musical's exploration of beauty, self-acceptance, and the American civil rights era gives it a depth that many musicals lack. London productions bring fresh perspectives to a show that deserves to be far more widely known.
Practical information for visitors
Violet plays periodically in London. Check current listings for the latest production and venue. The musical deals with themes of disfigurement, racism, and religious faith. Suitable for teenagers and adults. Running time is approximately two hours including an interval.
