Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell are taking Beatrice and Benedick to New York. Jamie Lloyd's production of Much Ado About Nothing, which played the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the West End, begins Broadway previews at the Winter Garden Theatre on Saturday 31 October 2026. It officially opens on Thursday 19 November and plays a strictly limited 10-week engagement until Sunday 10 January 2027.
The transfer reunites the full London cast and creative team. The Jamie Lloyd Company produces the show at the Winter Garden, 1634 Broadway.
Hiddleston and Atwell reunite as Benedick and Beatrice
Hiddleston plays Benedick and Atwell plays Beatrice, Shakespeare's sparring pair who insist they will never marry until their friends conspire to change their minds. The producers describe the show as a "giddily funny and beautifully tender battle of wits", and Hiddleston says Lloyd has "decorated the play with music, dancing, love, and laughter".
The London run won over the critics. The Telegraph called it "a brilliantly inventive, much-needed blast of fun", Time Out named it the number one show of the year in a five-star review, the Financial Times found Hiddleston "superb" and the Standard called Atwell "simply magnificent". The production's official site describes the London run as record-breaking. Atwell went on to win the Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress and the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Best Shakespearean Performance for her Beatrice.
Hayley Atwell makes her Broadway debut
This will be Atwell's first time on Broadway. "After 20 years on the stages of London's West End, it is a huge honour for me to be invited to make my Broadway debut playing Beatrice in this electric production," she said when the transfer was announced. She has worked with Lloyd before, earning an Olivier nomination for Best Actress in his 2013 London production of The Pride.
Hiddleston returns to New York after Lloyd's revival of Harold Pinter's Betrayal, which transferred from London to Broadway in 2019 and earned him a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play. He said he had "always wanted to play Benedick" and called the production "jubilant and joyous".
The full Broadway company and creative team
The company also includes Mara Huf as Hero, Mika Onyx Johnson as Borachio, Gerald Kyd as Don Pedro, Forbes Masson as Leonato, Phillip Olagoke as Friar Francis, Mason Alexander Park as Margaret, James Phoon as Claudio and Tim Steed as Don John. Park makes their Broadway debut, after an Ian Charleson Award nomination for the role in London. The understudies are Franklin Bongjio, Michael Iván Carrier, Beth Elliott, Marlon Alexander Vargas and Ed White.
Soutra Gilmour designs the set and costumes, with lighting by Jon Clark, sound and music by Ben and Max Ringham, and choreography by Fabian Aloise. Jon Glew is UK associate director and text editor.
Student tickets and a pink first preview
Ahead of previews, the producers announced 2,500 discounted student tickets across the run, collected from the Winter Garden box office with a valid student ID. For the first preview on Saturday 31 October, audiences are invited to dress in any shade of pink to join what London Theatre called "the biggest party of the year".
Jamie Lloyd's next Broadway transfer from London
This is the first of two Jamie Lloyd Company productions heading from the West End to the Winter Garden. Lloyd's staging of Evita, which played the London Palladium in summer 2025, is due to open there in spring 2027.
The Broadway run is strictly limited, and there is no news of a return to London. For more transatlantic theatre news, read about Jonathan Groff's return to Broadway in The Amish Project. For Broadway tickets more widely, see Broadway tickets on tickadoo.
