Scottish Opera's Access Madama Butterfly at Theatre Royal Glasgow: relaxed performance with audio description and reduced capacity. Book tickets.
Scottish Opera's Access performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at Theatre Royal Glasgow is a specially adapted showing with a shortened running time of around two hours, audio description, a live presenter, reduced capacity and a relaxed atmosphere.
Director Daisy Evans and designer Kat Heath, who previously collaborated on Scottish Opera's Albert Herring in 2024, reimagine the opera as a journey through memory and identity, declining to frame Cio-Cio-San's suffering as something beautiful or inevitable. The production treats the story as a meditation on what people inherit, what they conceal, and the cost of truth eventually surfacing.
The creative team also includes lighting designer Jake Wiltshire and costume designer Catherine Fay. The cast features Sunyoung Seo, previously seen in Scottish Opera's Il trittico in 2023, as Cio-Cio-San; Andrés Presno as Pinkerton; Lea Shaw, who appeared in L'heure espagnole in 2025, as Suzuki; and Phillip Rhodes, last seen in La traviata in 2024, as Sharpless. The production comes to Glasgow after an earlier run in Dublin.
A presenter introduces the story and characters before the performance begins. Capacity in the auditorium is kept lower than usual so everyone has more space, and lighting levels are brighter. Quiet areas are available for anyone who needs a break during the show.
Audio description is available, wheelchair spaces are provided, and additional front of house staff are on hand to welcome guests and to assist anyone wishing to transfer from a wheelchair to a seat. The format is intended for those living with dementia or Long COVID, anyone recovering from an operation, people who find evening events difficult, or those who would benefit from a calmer, more supported environment.
