Free 30-minute pre-show talk on Scottish Opera's Alcina at Theatre Royal Glasgow. Limited places for ages 12+. Reserve your booking in advance.
A free, thirty-minute pre-show talk at Theatre Royal Glasgow offers a closer look at the creative thinking behind Scottish Opera's production of Handel's Alcina. Places are limited and must be reserved in advance.
The half-hour session explores the detail of Alcina from the perspective of those who made it, with the aim of deepening audiences' familiarity with the production and the piece.
Scottish Opera's staging places Handel's opera in a fictional nightclub called Club Amnesia, where Alcina holds sway as a performance artist who bends the minds of those around her. The drama turns on the arrival of Ruggiero's fiancée, who enters disguised as a man in an attempt to free her lover, setting up a collision between desire and disillusionment.
Olivia Fuchs directs, following her earlier Scottish Opera production of The Makropulos Affair. Designs are by Yannis Thavoris, whose credits include Marx in London! in 2024, with lighting by Jake Wiltshire, previously responsible for Albert Herring in 2024. Dmitri Jurowski conducts. The advertised cast features Madeline Boreham in her first Scottish Opera appearance in the title role. Three members of the 2026/27 Emerging Artists cohort, Charlotte Clapperton, Charlotte Jane Kennedy, and Luvo Maranti, appear alongside Emerging Artist alumni Chloe Harris and Edward Jowle, both previously seen in The Marriage of Figaro in 2026.
The talk carries a 12+ age guidance and references drug misuse, consistent with the advisory for the opera itself. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance, and availability is limited.
