Scottish Opera - Fidelio Pre Show Talk tickets in Glasgow

A free 30-minute pre-show talk at Theatre Royal Glasgow offers a closer look at Scottish Opera's new production of Beethoven's Fidelio. Tickets must be reserved in advance and availability is limited.

What the talk covers

Each half-hour session examines Fidelio in detail before the performance. The talk is a separate event from the opera itself, and attending it does not include admission to the main performance.

Fidelio is Beethoven's only opera, a work whose themes of political imprisonment, freedom of conscience and individual courage against a corrupt system lend themselves to contextual discussion before the music begins.

About the production being discussed

The opera follows Leonore, who disguises herself as a man named Fidelio to find work as a prison guard and locate her husband Florestan, held secretly by a corrupt nobleman. The score includes the celebrated Prisoners' Chorus. The production forms part of a 2027 collaboration between Scotland's orchestras and its national opera company to mark 200 years since Beethoven's death.

The staging is directed by Ruth Knight, with designs by Yannis Thavoris and Alisa Kalyanova. Julia Sporsén is advertised in the role of Leonore / Fidelio, and Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy as Florestan.

Booking and age guidance

The talk carries an age guidance of 12 and above at Theatre Royal Glasgow. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance, and places are limited.
