Opened in March 2022 and operated by ATG Entertainment, it is instantly recognisable for its gold facade and wraparound LED display. The fully modular auditorium switches between seated and standing layouts, which lets it host big name music, comedy and touring theatre alongside e-sports, conferences and corporate events. It is a short walk from Swansea railway station across the Copr Bay bridge, with parking and step free routes close by.

History

The arena is the centrepiece of Copr Bay, a regeneration scheme worth 135 million pounds that Swansea Council announced in 2015 to reshape the Swansea Bay area. The building was designed by the architecture practice ACME, with construction starting in 2019 and Buckingham Group as principal contractor. After a search for an operator lasting around eighteen months, Ambassador Theatre Group, now ATG Entertainment, signed a thirty year lease with the council.

Building work took longer than first planned, partly because security requirements were reviewed following the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017. The opening event, a Royal Blood concert, was also delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the arena finally opened its doors to the public on 3 March 2022. The official opening was attended by Mark Drakeford, then First Minister of Wales. In its first year the venue welcomed 240,000 people.

The exterior is one of the most talked about parts of the project: gold coloured aluminium panels wrapped in a display made up of 93,000 LEDs, described as the largest digital facade in the United Kingdom. Phase one of Copr Bay also delivered a gold painted footbridge over Oystermouth Road linking the site to the city centre, a coastal themed park with a pavilion cafe restaurant, a multi storey car park beneath it and retail units on Cupid Way.

The venue was known simply as Swansea Arena until 28 January 2025, when Swansea Building Society announced a five year naming rights agreement and the arena took its current name.

Transport

Train

Swansea railway station is the nearest stop, roughly a 10 minute walk or a 6 minute drive from the arena. Swansea is served by Great Western Railway high speed services from London and by frequent Transport for Wales services from West Wales, the Marches, the Midlands and the South West.

Bus

Local bus routes running in and out of the city centre serve the arena, and the closest stop is in The Quadrant.

Parking

There is a multi storey car park beneath the adjacent coastal park, with a staircase and lift from the car park to the main entrance level. Five electric vehicle charge points are available in the Copr Bay South car park. Drivers arriving via the M4 should use junction 47 from the Carmarthen direction and junction 42 from the London or Cardiff direction.

Seating plan and where to sit

The auditorium is modular, so the layout changes with the event. Seat numbers, standing areas and even the position of accessible spaces can differ from one show to the next, which is why it is worth checking the plan for your specific date before you book.

Stalls

The flexible floor level closest to the stage. Depending on the production this may be fully seated, part standing or a mix of the two. It is the recommended area for anyone who wants a closer view of the stage, and the arena's interactive view from seat tool on the official seating page lets you preview the sightline before choosing.

Front Circle

The first tier above the floor, giving a raised and generally head on view of the whole stage. It holds 10 fixed wheelchair positions, each with a companion seat beside it.

Rear Circle

The upper tier, a good choice for big music and comedy nights where seeing the full stage picture matters more than detail. There are 8 fixed wheelchair positions on this level.

Choosing your seats

  • Seats measure 44cm, or 17 inches, between the armrests, and the armrests are fixed.
  • For concerts, check whether the Stalls are seated or standing for your date.
  • For audio described performances any area of the auditorium works, so choose on comfort and budget.
  • The Ambassador Lounge can be added for pre show and interval table service, for which a charge applies.

Accessibility

ATG Entertainment describes the arena as fully accessible, with step free walkways to the front entrance and all areas inside served by two lifts.

  • Getting in: a sloping walkway leads from the city centre across the Copr Bay bridge to the front entrance, and a second sloping walkway runs from Oystermouth Road through the Coastal Park. A staircase and lift in the adjacent car park reach the main entrance level.
  • Wheelchair spaces: 8 fixed positions in the Rear Circle and 10 in the Front Circle. Because the Stalls layout changes from show to show, the number and location of wheelchair spaces on that level varies, and box office staff can talk you through the options. Every wheelchair space has a companion seat directly alongside.
  • Booking: accessible seating is booked through the dedicated Access line on 0333 009 2540. General accessibility assistance is on 0333 009 5399, or via Typetalk on 1800 1 0333 009 5399. A free Access Membership Scheme allows online booking of accessible seats and essential companion tickets if eligible.
  • Toilets and facilities: accessible toilets and baby change facilities on every level, with baby feeding facilities on request. Breastfeeding is welcome.
  • Assistance dogs: trained assistance and guide dogs are welcome. Tell the team when booking so you can be seated appropriately, or staff can look after your dog in a designated area with water bowls and regular comfort breaks.
  • Sensory support: the venue uses the Mobile Connect hearing enhancement system. Audio described performances and touch tours are advertised on individual show pages, and Stalls seats are recommended for anyone wanting a closer view of the stage.
  • Other: dropped counters at all sales points and kiosks, step free access to the lounge, and at your seat food and drink ordering by smartphone to avoid queues.
