The Beat's Dance Crazed Too UK Tour visits Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone, with special guests The Dualers and DJ Rhoda Dakar completing the bill. The Birmingham-born Two Tone ska band built their name on a sound crossing soul, reggae, pop and punk, and continue to tour and perform.
The Beat formed in Birmingham in 1979, a period of considerable social and political upheaval. Dave Wakeling handled vocals and guitar, Andy Cox played guitar, David Steele played bass and Everett Morton held the drum chair; Ranking Roger on toasting and First Wave Ska legend Saxa on saxophone joined later. Drawing from soul, reggae, pop and punk, they became one of the central acts of the British Two Tone Ska movement alongside The Specials, The Selecter and Madness.
By late 1979 they had reached the UK charts with a version of the Smokey Robinson song Tears of a Clown. Three studio albums followed over the next five years: I Just Can't Stop It, Wh'appen and Special Beat Service. Songs from that period, including Mirror in the Bathroom, Save it for Later, Stand Down Margaret and Can't Get Used To Losing You, remain closely associated with the band.
The Dance Crazed Too UK Tour is a live concert by The Beat, with ska act The Dualers appearing as special guests and DJ Rhoda Dakar also on the bill, making this a multi-act evening.
At Leas Cliff Hall, the venue operates a mixed seating and standing arrangement. The standing floor carries a strictly enforced minimum age of 14. All those aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, wherever they are in the venue. Standing is not permitted in the seated area.
