Prof Alice Roberts: From Cell to Civilisation is a live show covering genetics, archaeology and human evolution, running 2hrs 45mins. Book your tickets.
Prof Alice Roberts brings From Cell to Civilisation to UK stages, a live theatrical show blending archaeology, evolutionary biology and genetics. It traces the story of life from its origins 3.8 billion years ago through to the peopling of every continent, using theatrical sound, light and imagination to present the science.
The evening spans an enormous stretch of time, beginning with the first appearance of life on Earth and following evolution through to the emergence and spread of our own species. The narrative tracks human migration out of Africa, along the Indian coastline, into Australia, across Europe and Siberia, and finally into the Americas, with other human species encountered along the way.
Alongside the migration story, the show examines some of the earliest known civilisations and explores the methods scientists use to reach their conclusions, drawing on genetics and the archaeological record together. The aim is to show not just what the current evidence suggests, but how researchers arrive at those conclusions.
Although categorised as a talk, From Cell to Civilisation is staged as a full theatrical production, with sound and lighting used to animate the scientific content. The show runs for approximately 2 hours 45 minutes, with evening performances finishing at approximately 10:15 pm.
