WILLY WONKA'S WORLD OF PURE IMAGINATION
Now in it's third record breaking year, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is still entertaining audiences of all ages.
Roald Dahl’s classic story of Charlie Bucket and his encounter with the dark, fantastical world of Willy Wonka and his extraordinary Chocolate Factory, is brought to the West End Stage in a new Musical adaptation directed by Sam Mendes (Academy Award® Winner for American Beauty).
This timeless tale that has been thrilling children and adults alike for almost 50 years, has been given a new lease of life by a phenomenal creative team: With lyrics Scott Wittman, music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman (Grammy® Award Winners – Hairspray and Smash), book by the critically acclaimed playwright David Greig (Tintin in Tibet, The Bacchae), Peter Darling as Choreographer (Matilda The Musical and Billy Elliot The Musical), and design for set and costumes provided by Mark Thompson (Mamma Mia! and One Man, Two Guvnors).
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
On winning a much sought after golden ticket, Charlie is invited to visit Wonka’s Chocolate Factory – something every child has dreamed of. But once inside the strange and mysterious world of Willy Wonka’s Factory, Charlie and the four other winners are in for a surprise as they discover amidst the chocolate rivers and sugary edible treats, things are not quite as they seem.
This new musical is a spectacle that will leave you in awe as you journey down the sugary corridors of Wonka’s Chocolate factory, pass through its garden of chocolate, encounter an army of squirrels and the infamous Oompa-Loompas! Prepare to be amazed.
WHO IS IN THE SHOW?
The role of Willy Wonka is currently being played by Alex Jennings, whose stage credits include Henry Higgin in My Fair Lady, film credits include The Queen as Prince Charles, and appearances in television series such as Miss Sarple, Being Human, Inspector Morse and Spooks.
DID YOU KNOW?
Whilst Nestle's currently make the new Wonka bars, Quaker Oats, a long time backer of Saturday morning cartoons in the USA, financed the filming of the movie back in 1970. It was their only venture into the film industry.
There have been two major film adaptations of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory: Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder in 1971 and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp in 2005.
Roald Dahl originally wanted Spike Milligan to play Willy Wonka in the 1971 film. His other choices Ron Moody and Jon Pertwee also turned down the role.
Roald Dahl hated the 1971 film adaptation and refused producers the film rights to make the sequel, Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator.
