Back to the Future The Musical is on its first ever UK tour, adapted from the 1985 film by its original creators Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis. The production has won Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards, WhatsOnStage Awards and Broadway World Awards, and visits several UK venues with Axel Duffy as Marty McFly.

The story and its stage adaptation

The musical follows teenager Marty McFly after he is accidentally transported back to 1955 in Doc Brown's time machine, disrupting the course of events and putting his own existence at risk. He must work urgently to repair the damage to the timeline before his only route home becomes impossible. The book is by Bob Gale, who co-wrote the original screenplay alongside Robert Zemeckis.

The score combines newly composed original songs by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard with recognisable tracks from the film, among them The Power of Love, Johnny B. Goode, Earth Angel and Back in Time. Silvestri is also known for his work on Avengers: Endgame, while Ballard co-wrote Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror. The show is directed by Tony Award-winner John Rando.

Cast and venue particulars

Axel Duffy plays Marty McFly across the tour. At Bristol Hippodrome and Edinburgh Playhouse, he is joined by Roger Bart as Doc Brown, Bart originated the role in Manchester, the West End, on Broadway and in Sydney. At Milton Keynes Theatre, Brian Conley takes on Doc Brown, though he does not appear at every performance there. Check the venue listing for his scheduled appearances. Doc Brown casting at Liverpool Empire, Sunderland Empire and Manchester Opera House is not specified in the checked listings.

Audience and access information

The show is recommended for ages 6 and above. Under-16s must sit alongside an adult aged 18 or over, and under-3s will not be admitted. The production uses strobe lighting, loud sounds, haze and pyrotechnics. Running time is 2 hours 40 minutes.
