One of the most anticipated West End revivals of the autumn season has just raised the stakes considerably. The full cast has been announced for a brand new production of Noël Coward's beloved comedy Hay Fever, which will play a strictly limited season at Wyndham's Theatre from 22 September to 12 December 2026. With a glittering ensemble led by Christine Baranski and Richard E. Grant, and directed by Emily Burns, this promises to be one of the hottest tickets of the season.

A Star-Studded Ensemble Takes Shape

Two-time Tony Award winner Christine Baranski will lead the company as Judith Bliss, the magnificently self-dramatising former actress at the heart of Coward's comedy. Alongside her, Academy Award nominee Richard E. Grant takes on the role of David Bliss, Judith's novelist husband. Their casting was announced earlier this year and generated significant excitement among theatre fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

Now the full company for Hay Fever has been confirmed, and it is packed with talent. Olivier Award winner Nancy Carroll joins as Myra Arundel, bringing formidable stage credentials honed across the National Theatre, the RSC, the Donmar Warehouse, and numerous West End productions. Carroll won both the Olivier Award and the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress for her performance in After the Dance, and her extensive credits span everything from Arcadia and Betrayal to acclaimed television roles in The Crown, The Diplomat, and Father Brown.

Will Close takes on the role of Simon Bliss, while Ophelia Lovibond, known for her work on stage and screen, plays Sorel Bliss. Charles Edwards, a distinguished stage and screen actor, has been cast as Richard Greatham, and Ash Hunter will play Sandy Tyrell. Lucy Karczewski completes the roster of weekend guests as Jackie Coryton, with Jo McInnes as Clara. The ensemble is rounded out by Helena Antoniou, Charlotte Avery, and Shaun Mendum.

Why Hay Fever Remains One of Coward's Greatest Comedies

First staged in 1925, Hay Fever is a masterclass in social comedy and remains one of Noël Coward's most frequently revived plays. The plot centres on the eccentric Bliss family, who each independently invite a guest to their country home for the weekend, without telling anyone else. What follows is a deliciously chaotic collision of egos, flirtations, theatrical tantrums, and increasingly bewildered visitors.

Coward himself described it as having "no plot and remarkably little action," yet the play's razor-sharp wit, impeccable comic timing, and acute observation of English social mores have kept audiences laughing for a century. It is a play that rewards brilliant ensemble acting, making the calibre of this new cast particularly exciting.

Emily Burns Directs a "Stinging New Production"

Directing this revival is Emily Burns, whose growing reputation as a sharp interpreter of classic texts makes her an inspired choice for Coward's material. Producers Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions have described the production as a "stinging new" take on the comedy, suggesting that Burns may bring a contemporary edge to proceedings while honouring the play's precision-tooled comic architecture.

Burns has built a strong body of work across some of London's leading theatres, and her appointment signals an intention to present Hay Fever as more than a cosy period piece. With performers of the stature of Baranski and Grant at her disposal, alongside a company rich in classical experience, the creative conditions are ripe for something special.

Wyndham's Theatre: The Perfect Home for Coward

There is a fitting elegance to staging Coward at Wyndham's Theatre. The intimate Edwardian playhouse on Charing Cross Road, part of the Delfont Mackintosh Theatres group, has long been one of the West End's most distinguished homes for drama. Its scale suits the drawing-room dynamics of Hay Fever beautifully, allowing audiences to feel drawn into the Bliss family's chaotic hospitality rather than watching from a distance.

The limited season runs from 22 September to 12 December 2026, with a press night on 1 October. At just under twelve weeks, this is a comparatively short run by West End standards, which only adds to the sense of occasion and urgency around booking.

What Makes This Production Unmissable

Several factors combine to make this revival a genuinely event-level production. Christine Baranski's West End appearances have been exceedingly rare. Best known internationally for her Emmy-nominated roles in The Good Wife and The Good Fight, as well as film appearances in the Mamma Mia! franchise and Chicago, she is a formidable stage actress with two Tony Awards to her name. Seeing her inhabit Judith Bliss, one of Coward's greatest comic creations, is reason enough to book.

Richard E. Grant, meanwhile, brings his own distinctive blend of charisma and comic timing to David Bliss. Grant's theatre work may be less prolific than his screen career, but his talent for playing men of grand yet slightly crumbling self-regard makes him an ideal fit for Coward's world.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. Nancy Carroll is one of the finest stage actresses of her generation, a performer whose Olivier Award-winning work demonstrates exactly the kind of theatrical intelligence Coward demands. Ophelia Lovibond and Charles Edwards add further lustre to a company that reads like a dream team for this material.

Hay Fever cast announcement, Wyndham's Theatre 2026

Should You Book?

Absolutely. A limited West End run of a Noël Coward classic with a cast of this calibre does not come along often. Hay Fever is the kind of production where every element, from the writing to the performers to the venue, aligns beautifully. With further tickets released from £30, there are options across a range of budgets, but demand for a run this short with stars of this magnitude is likely to be intense. If you love sharp, sophisticated comedy performed by some of the best actors working today, this should be at the top of your autumn theatre list.

The production opens at Wyndham's Theatre on 22 September 2026. Don't leave it too late.
