Britishtheatre.com is sad to report the passing of award-winning director Mike Nichols today at the age of 83.

The German-born US director was one of only 12 stars to win all four major US entertainment awards - an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

The director was married to ABC News presented Diane Sawyer - his fourth wife - who he married in 1988.

Nichols began his career in the last 1950's as part of a comedy duo with Elaine May.

Switching to directing, he made his Broadway debut with Neil Simon's Barefoot In The Park, starring Robert Redford which earned Nichols his first Tony Award in 1964. Other works include the film adaptation of Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman for which he won the Oscar, the film Silkwood featuring Cher and Meryl Streep, Working Girl starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, Postcards From The Edge starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine, The Birdcage with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane and the television series Angels In America amongst many other film and stage projects. Mike directed the stage productions of Spamalot and won the Tony Award for the revival of Death Of A Salesman in 2012.

His was an extraordinary talent that will be sorely missed by actors and audiences alike.
