Chicago continues to cement its place in theatrical history as the longest-running American musical on Broadway. Playing at the Ambassador Theatre in New York since its 1996 revival opened, the Kander and Ebb classic has now surpassed 12,000 performances with no announced closing date in sight.
Still Going Strong
The current Broadway cast features Whitney Leavitt as Roxie Hart through 3 May, with Mark Ballas joining as Billy Flynn from 6 April. The revolving door of star casting has been central to Chicago's longevity on Broadway, with the production regularly refreshing its marquee names while maintaining the stripped-back, Bob Fosse-inspired staging that has defined it for nearly three decades.
London History
London audiences know Chicago well. The West End production originally opened at the Adelphi Theatre in November 1997 before transferring to the Cambridge Theatre and then the Garrick Theatre, where it ran until September 2012 after nearly 15 years. A return engagement at the Phoenix Theatre followed in 2018.
With the show continuing to draw audiences on Broadway and its brand recognition remaining strong in the UK, speculation about another West End run has become a recurring topic among London theatre fans. No official announcement has been made, but the musical's track record in London suggests it would find an audience quickly if it returned.
A Show That Refuses to Age
What makes Chicago's endurance remarkable is how well its themes continue to resonate. The story of celebrity, corruption, and media manipulation feels as pointed now as it did when the revival first opened. The Fosse choreography, the Kander and Ebb score, and the vaudeville-style staging give the production a timeless quality that few musicals can match.
